Example question:
What is the usual policy regarding referrals?
Referrals to a counsellor can be from many sources but most likely you will be referring yourself. I am happy to communicate with your other health care providers about the best treatment methods for you.
Are counsellors bound by confidentiality and privacy?
Yes, counsellors have to abide by Australian Government legislation regarding privacy and confidentiality. Any information kept by a counsellor is always available to you but not to anyone else unless by court subpoena. Counsellors must obtain your permission before contacting any of your other health care providers. Counsellors are also bound by mandatory reporting requirements meaning that they must advice appropriate persons if there is risk of harm to you or another person in not doing so.
What would you say is a reasonable time to stay in a marriage that is not working?
If you, your children or your partner is at risk of physical, psychological or emotional harm you should seek help immediately. See contact numbers below. Don't stay in a dangerous situation, ask for help from neighbours, friends or a professional helper such as a counsellor or refuge.
We make a special kind of commitment when we get a marriage licence. When you have honestly exhausted all possibilities for improving your marriage including seeking professional help preferrably as a couple or if not as an individual then there may be no alternative but to move on. In Australia there are now resources available at no charge or minimal charge to help marriage partners work out avenues for improvement. Family Relationship Centres should be an early port of call and can be contacted by phoning 1800 050 321 or if in Tasmania 6211 2100.
What is the difference between life coaching and counselling?
The way I see it, a life coach will help you by designing a strategy to create a desired positive outcome in the world, your family, work or inner self. Having arrived at a strategy they will then stick with you, guide you and mentor you in achieving your goal.
Much the same happens in counselling/psychotherapy but along the way you might benefit from redeciding on the meaning of your personal history. You might decide to relinquish beliefs about yourself that no longer serve you well.
To a fly on the wall - life coaching and counselling would look very similar.
